Flodden
Flodden, or Floddon Field, the battle of Flodden, in Northumberland, fought on 9 Sept. 1513, when the earl of Surrey on behalf of Henry VIII (then in France) defeated James IV of Scotland, the latter being killed on the field. It was made the subject of poems, of rejoicing or lament, on both sides of the border. Skelton's ‘Agaynst the Scottes’ is a rude song of exultation of the English victory. On the Scottish side there is the beautiful lament ‘The Flowers o' the Forest’, of which the most popular version is by J. Elliot. The battle is described in the 6th canto of Scott's Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field.

Flodden
Flodden field, Northumberland, N England, just across the border from Coldstream, Scotland. It was the scene of the battle of Flodden Field (1513), in which the English under Thomas Howard, 2d duke of Norfolk, defeated the Scots under James IV, who was killed. |
