Phoenicopteridae

Phoenicopteridae (flamingos; class Aves, order Ciconiiformes) A family of large, white, pink, and vermilion birds which have black wing tips, very long necks and legs, short, webbed feet, bare faces, and a deep bill, bent down at the mid-point. The mandibles have lamellae for sieving plankton. Flamingos inhabit shallow, freshwater and salt lakes, feed on plankton and small invertebrates, and nest colonially on mud platforms. The two or three species (sometimes regarded as a single species) of Phoenicopterus are typical flamingos, with rosy-pink plumage, black primaries, pink or blue legs, and a pink or yellow bill with a black tip. There are three genera, some migratory, and five or six species, found in southern Europe, Africa, southern Asia, Central and S. America, and the W.Indies.
