Five Forks
Five Forks crossroads near Dinwiddie Courthouse, SW of Petersburg, Va. The last important battle of the Civil War was fought there on Apr. 1, 1865. Philip H. Sheridan , leading his own and Gouverneur K. Warren's corps, decisively defeated the Confederates under Pickett. The victory led to the fall of Petersburg , the capture of Richmond, and the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox Court House. |

Five Forks, Battle of
Five Forks, Battle of the last major battle of the Civil War, fought on April 1, 1865, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, between Union forces under Gen. Philip H. Sheridan and Confederates under Gen. George E. Pickett. The gains of the Union victory were instrumental in forcing Robert E. Lee to abandon the defense of Richmond.
