Fitzroy
Fitzroy, Australia, UK 1. Australia (Western Australia): a river named in 1838 by Lieutenant John Stokes of HMS Beagle in honour of Vice Admiral Robert Fitzroy (1805–65), a British naval officer who commanded the Beagle (1828–30, 1831–6) and was governor of New Zealand (1843–5).2. Australia (Queensland): a river and an offshore island named after Sir Charles Fitzroy (1796–1858), governor of New South Wales (1846–50), which at this time included this area, and governor of Australia (1850–5).3. UK (Falkland Islands): on East Falkland, it is named after Vice Admiral Robert Fitzroy who commanded HMS Beagle when it made its round‐the‐world voyage in 1831–6.

Fitzroy rivers in Australia. 1 River, 174 mi (280 km) long, formed by the junction of the Dawson and the Mackenzie rivers, E Queensland, Australia, and flowing past Rockhampton to Keppel Bay of the Coral Sea. 2 River, c.325 mi (525 km) long, rising in the eastern Kimberley Plateau, N Western Australia state, Australia, and flowing generally west to King Sound of the Indian Ocean. |

Fitzroy ♂ Transferred use of the Irish surname, in origin a patronymic formed from the Anglo-Norman French prefix fi(t)z ‘son of’ + Roy in one or other of its senses, though it is usually taken to imply that the original bearer was a bastard son of the king.
