Figueres or Figueras town (1990 pop. 34,463), Girona prov., NE Spain, in Catalonia, near the French border. Traditionally a fortified city because of its strategic location, it is now an important communications center. Its manufactures include chemicals, textiles, and cement. In the Spanish civil war Figueres served briefly as the seat of the Loyalist government. Its 18th-century fortress is now a prison.
