Fénéon, Félix
Fénéon, Félix (1861–1944). French art and literary critic, dealer, and collector. He was most active as an art critic in the 1880s and 1890s, when he wrote for various magazines and became particularly known as a champion of Georges Seurat (in 1886 Fénéon coined the term Neo-Impressionism to characterize his work). From 1896 to 1903 he was editor of the literary journal La Revue blanche, and from 1906 to 1925 he was a director of the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, where he promoted the work of various avant-garde artists. His own collection included work by leading contemporaries such as Braque and Derain and also African art. He devoted much of his retirement to assisting César de Hauke with a catalogue raisonné of Seurat's work, eventually published in two volumes in 1961. Oeuvres, a collection of Fénéon's articles and other works, was published in 1948.
