Felix Bracquemond

Bracquemond, Félix

Bracquemond, Félix (b Paris, ?28 May 1833; d Sèvres, 27 Oct. 1914). French printmaker, draughtsman, painter, and designer. He worked mainly as an etcher and played a leading role in the revival of the medium as a creative rather than merely a reproductive technique. He was also one of the first French artists to discover Japanese prints (see Ukiyo-e). His own prints included landscapes, portraits, and subjects involving animals, particularly birds. Among the portraits are several of his artist friends, including Degas and Manet; he gave advice about printmaking to both Manet and Camille Pissarro. Braquemond took part in three of the Impressionist exhibitions (1874, 1879, 1880). His wife Marie Bracquemond (1840–1916) was a painter and printmaker; she too exhibited with the Impressionists (1879, 1880, 1886).
