Hemans, Mrs Felicia Dorothea

Hemans, Mrs Felicia Dorothea, née Browne (1793–1835), a precocious and copious poet, born in Liverpool and educated at home. She published her first volume of Poems when she was 15, and in 1812 married Captain Hemans, from whom she lived apart from 1818, though they had five sons. From the publication of The Domestic Affections (1812), she produced further volumes, exhibiting a wide range of subject and style, including many historical poems, a volume of patriotic Welsh Melodies (1822), and Records of Woman (1828), evoking legendary and historical women. She made many translations, including Translations from Camoens and Other Poets (1818). Her works were very popular, especially in America. The most famous of her poems, ‘Casabianca’, beginning ‘The boy stood on the burning deck’, appeared in The Forest Sanctuary (2nd edn, 1829).

Felicia Dorothea (Browne) Hemans

Felicia Dorothea (Browne) Hemans , 1793–1835, English poet. She married Capt. Alfred Hemans in 1812, had five children, and separated from him in 1818. Although she wrote much mild and sentimental poetry, today she is known only for "Casabianca," which has the famous first line, "The boy stood on the burning deck … ,""The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers," and "England's Dead."
