Soccer state of mind Freshmen from Wisconsin give college teams a lift; Soccer Capsules The following freshmen from Wisconsin played prominent roles for NCAA Division I women's soccer teams: Kelly Buszkiewicz, Homestead Scored four goals for Virginia, including a goal against North Carolina State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Earlier in the season, her goal in overtime gave Virginia (then ranked 10th) a 1-1 tie with ninth-ranked Maryland. Sara Fields, Brown Deer Started all 19 games for Arizona. Finished season with six assists. Kate Grellinger, Milwaukee Pius Started 15 games as goalkeeper for St. Louis and had seven shutouts (two of them shared). In one stretch, she went 319 minutes without allowing a goal. Gave up only 16 goals and had a 1.10 goals-against average. Jenny Heft, Milwaukee Pius Usually the first player off the bench but started three games for Notre Dame. Scored nine goals, including two game-winners, and had 12 assists for the defending national champion. Ansley Lavers, Whitefish Bay Scored five goals, including three game-winners, and had two assists for Wisconsin. Started 15 games. Erin Morgan, Stevens Point Started two of 23 games for Marquette. Scored nine goals and added one assist. Kelly Moser, Muskego Played in nine games for UW-Green Bay. Joy Provan, Cudahy Started all but one of 19 games she played in at UW-Milwaukee. A strong defender, was named to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference's second team. Had one assist. Kim Ring, Monona Grove Played in 15 games, starting 12, as a defender at UWM. Kelly Roethe, Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels Marquette's leading scorer with 13 goals and seven assists. Started 22 of 23 games. Marnie Staehly, Green Bay Southeast Played in eight games, starting three for UW-Green Bay. Judy Stafne, Hudson Scored seven goals and had four assists while playing in 19 games for UWM. Started one game. Aisha Thomas, Madison West Played in 16 games, starting 14 for Arizona State, scoring one goal. Carrie Watts, Waukesha Catholic Memorial Had two goals and two assists while playing in 21 games for Indiana. Started 16 games. Had an assist against Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament. Sarah Whiting, Wauwatosa West One of two players to start all 20 games for Missouri's first-year team. A defender, her only goal of the season gave Missouri its first victory, a 1-0 decision over Texas. Jo Anne Wilde, Waukesha Catholic Memorial Played in 19 games, starting seven, for UWM. Had two assists.
