Evangelical Church
Evangelical Church. A small American Protestant body, also known as the Albright Brethren after Jacob Albright (1759–1808). Albright, originally a Lutheran, associated himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1796 he began preaching, but, failing to gain the support of his Methodist leaders, he created for his followers an independent organization, known from 1816 as the Evangelical Association. Internal controversies led to a schism; this was healed in 1922 and the reunited body called itself the Evangelical Church. Through mergers with similar bodies, in 1968 it became a part of the United Methodist Church.
