European Convention on Human Rights

European Convention on Human Rights (1950) Agreement to protect the rights of the individual, signed by the members of the Council of Europe. It listed 12 basic rights, including the right to life, to a fair trial, to peaceful assembly and association, and to freedom of expression, and freedom from slavery and torture. An additional protocol provides for the abolition of the death penalty. See also human rights
