Walter, Eugene
Walter, Eugene (1874–1941), American dramatist, author of 20 plays, the best of which, though somewhat melodramatic, seemed to point the way towards a more realistic and sober approach to social problems by contemporary American playwrights. They included Paid in Full (1908), in which a wife gets her husband cleared of embezzlement, but in doing so comes to despise him; and The Easiest Way (1909), about a kept woman who loses a chance to break free. Walter failed to live up to his early promise, and his later plays are negligible. Among them were dramatizations of two popular novels by John Fox, Jr, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1912) and The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (1916).

Walter, Eugene
Walter, Eugene (1874–1941), playwright. The Cleveland native served as a newsman and theatrical advance agent before writing his first play, followed by some two dozen others to reach Broadway. The best were a pair of melodramas that were perceived as bringing a fresh note of stark realism to the theatre of their time: Paid in Full (1908) and The Easiest Way (1909). Although Walter never lived up to the promise of these early plays, several later works were not without merit: The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1912), Fine Feathers (1913), and Just a Woman (1916). He also wrote the book How to Write a Play (1925).
