Este
Este town (1991 pop. 17,668), in Venetia, NE Italy. It is an agricultural and light manufacturing center. The ancient Ateste, it was a center of civilization (10th–2d cent. BC) of which many important remains have been found. It was later a Roman military colony. The Este family originated in the town. In 1275 it passed to Padua and in 1405 to Venice. Este has a castle (11th–14th cent.), several fine villas, and an excellent archaeological museum. |

Este, Veneto/Italy Ateste The present name is derived from the original one which meant the ‘City on the (River) Atesis’, now called the Adige. In the 6th century, however, the river changed its course and the town no longer lies on it.
