Josephson, Ernst
Josephson, Ernst (b Stockholm, 16 Apr. 1851; d Stockholm, 22 Nov. 1906). Swedish painter and draughtsman. He travelled widely in Europe early in his career and in 1882–8 he lived in Paris, where he was the leader of a group of anti-academic Swedish artists. At this time he moved from a naturalistic style to a much more fantastic idiom, often inspired by Nordic myth, and his work is particularly remarkable for its intensity and vitality of colouring. In 1887 he began suffering from mental instability and never fully recovered. None the less, he continued to work intensively, and the bizarre paintings he produced—although little known in his lifetime—were influential on Expressionism in Sweden. Josephson's work is particularly well represented in the Konstmuseum in Göteborg and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
