Lawson, Ernest
Lawson, Ernest (1873–1939). American painter, the least distinguished and most orthodox member of The Eight. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie Julian in Paris, and settled in New York in 1898. In Paris he was a friend of Somerset Maugham, who later used Lawson as the model for the character Frederick Lawson in his novel Of Human Bondage (1915). Unlike the other members of The Eight he was primarily a landscapist (although he did also paint urban scenes) and his style was essentially Impressionist. Lawson exhibited at the Armory Show in 1913. During the 1920s he taught in Kansas City and Colorado Springs, and he spent his last three years in Florida.
