Enola Gay

Enola Gay

Enola Gay the B-29 “superfortress” bomber that carried and dropped the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. The B-29 was designed for high-altitude high-speed flight over long distances. Fifteen of these superfortresses were modified specifically to carry out the atomic bomb missions.

Paul Tibbets (1915–), who piloted the aircraft on its mission, named the plane to honor his mother, Enola Gay, and had the name painted on the bomber's side just before taking off. The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum held an Enola Gay exhibition from June 28, 1995 until May 18, 1998. Although the size of the Enola Gay makes it impossible to display in the museum, Smithsonian aircraft restoration specialists have spent nearly a decade (44,000 staff hours) restoring it.
