Émile Mâle

Émile Mâle , 1862–1954, French art historian. Mâle pioneered the study of French art of the Middle Ages, its forms, and especially the Eastern sources of sculptural iconography of the cathedrals of France. He was a director of the Académie de France à Rome and a member of the Académie Française. Among Mâle's major works are L'Art religieux du XIIIe siècle en France (1913, tr. The Gothic Image, 1958) and L'Art religieux du XIIe au XVIIIe siècle (1945, tr. 1949).

Mâle, Émile

Mâle, Émile (b Commentry, 2 Jun. 1862; d Chaalis, Oise, 6 Oct. 1954). French art historian. A pioneer in the study of French medieval art, he became professor of the history of art at the Sorbonne in 1912. His best-known book is probably L'Art religieux du XIIIe siècle en France (1902), translated into English as The Gothic Image (1913). His work is distinguished not only by great learning but also by literary merit, his style being praised by Marcel Proust amongst others.

Mâle, Émile

Mâle, Émile (1862–1954). French art historian. A pioneer in the study of French medieval art, he became professor of the history of art at the Sorbonne in 1912. The best known of his books is probably L'Art religieux du XIIIe siècle en France (1902), translated as The Gothic Image (1913).
