Ellesmere
Ellesmere Canada, New Zealand, UK 1. Canada (Northwest Territories): the largest island of the Queen Elizabeth Islands, it was first seen by William Baffin (c.1584–1622), an English navigator, in 1616. However, it was only named after Francis Egerton (1800–57), 1st Earl of Ellesmere, British under‐secretary of state for the colonies (1828), in 1852 by Sir Edward Inglefield during his expedition to the region.2. New Zealand (South Island): a lake also named after the 1st Earl of Ellesmere.3. UK (England): formerly Ellesmeles and Ellismera ‘Elli's Pool’ from an Old English personal name and mere ‘pool’ or ‘lake’.
