Elgin
Elgin , city (1990 pop. 77,010), Cook and Kane counties, NE Ill., on the Fox River; inc. 1854. Elgin is a railroad, trade, and industrial city marked by a steady population growth. Corn and soybeans are grown and electrical and electronic equipment, pharmaceuticals, and household appliances are manufactured. The Elgin Watch Company (est. 1864) was based in the city until 1970. Judson College is there. |

Elgin, Canada, UK, USA 1. Canada (New Brunswick and Ontario): probably named after James Bruce (1811–63), 8th Earl of Elgin, governor‐general of Canada (1846–54).2. UK (Scotland): said to be ‘Little Ireland’ but this is unlikely. The meaning is unknown.3. USA (Illinois): founded in 1835 and said to derive from the Scottish hymn ‘The Song of Elgin’.
