Ord, Edward Otho Cresap (1818–83) Union army officer, born in Cumberland, Maryland. Ord gained national attention when he defeated J.E.B. Stuart in a major skirmish in Virginia (1861). Ord was often used by Ulysses S. Grant to replace problematic commanders. In 1864 he led an expedition into the Shenandoah Valley, assaulting and capturing Fort Harrison, Virginia. He later commanded the Army of the James in the final battles around Petersburg (1865). Before the war Ord had fought against the Seminoles in Florida (1839–42) and participated in several American Indian expeditions in the Northwest while in command of a company in California (1855). He had also assisted in suppressing John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry (1859) when stationed in Virginia.
