Dowden, Edward
Dowden, Edward (1843–1913), became professor of English literature at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1867. He was a noted Shakespearian scholar and published Shakspere: A Critical Study of His Mind and Art (1875) which influenced future approaches to Shakespearian biography; Shakspere (1877), a primer; and editions of single plays. He wrote other volumes of criticism, a life of Shelley (1887), short biographies of Southey, R. Browning, and Montaigne, and published editions of Spenser and other English poets.
