Edward Bond

Bond, (Thomas) Edward

Bond, (Thomas) Edward (1934– ), playwright. His plays include The Pope's Wedding (performed 1962); his grim portrait of urban violence, Saved (1965); Early Morning (1969); Lear (1971, pub. 1972), a version of Shakespeare which stresses the play's physical cruelty; The Sea (1973), a black country-house comedy; The Fool (1975, published 1976), based on the life of Clare; Restoration (1981), a Brechtian revolutionary historical drama with songs; and Summer (1982), set in a post-war Eastern European state. Bond's belief that violence occurs in ‘situations of injustice’ and that it therefore flourishes under capitalism, continues to arouse extreme responses from critics and audiences. The War Plays (1985) portrays life after a nuclear holocaust.

He has also written several film scripts, including Blow Up (1966).
