Wallace, (Richard) Edgar Horatio (1875–1932), English journalist, novelist, and playwright. He was the first to make a speciality of detective drama, many of his plays being based on his own books. Among the most successful were The Ringer (1926), The Terror (1927), The Squeaker (1928), The Flying Squad (1929), On the Spot, Smoky Cell (both 1930), and The Case of the Frightened Lady (1931), in all of which Wallace showed extraordinary perfection of detail, narrative skill, and knowledge of police methods and criminal psychology, fruits of his apprenticeship as a crime reporter.
