eccentricity

eccentricity (symbol e) A measure of the shape of an orbit, or how far it diverges from a circle. If e = 0, the orbit is a perfect circle. If e is less than 1 the orbit is an ellipse, and the nearer e is to 1, the more elongated the ellipse. If e = 1 exactly, the orbit is a parabola, and if e is greater than 1 the orbit is a hyperbola. The orbits of the planets and major satellites are ellipses of small eccentricity. Eccentricity is one of the elements of an orbit (see Elements, Orbital).

eccentricity

eccentricity (symbol e) One of the elements of an orbit. It indicates how much an elliptical orbit departs from a circle. It is found by dividing the distance between the two foci of the ellipse by the length of the major axis. A circle has an eccentricity of 0, a parabola an eccentricity of 1.
