Eastland Company
Eastland Company. One of the great trading companies, chartered in 1579, and trading with the Baltic. The foreign residence was first at Elbing, then at Danzig. The company imported timber and tar for shipbuilding, flax and linen, and corn, and exported mainly cloth. Dutch competition was fierce and there were the usual complaints of monopoly. The company was thrown open by an Act of 1673 and by the middle of the 18th cent. was moribund.
