ESH

ESH. In PHONETICS, an elongated form ∫ of the symbol s, that serves in IPA to represent the voiceless palato-alveolar central laminal fricative, a sound represented in English by the digraph sh as in shape and rush. The form was used by Isaac Pitman in 1845 with this value in his phonotypic ALPHABET. See LETTER1, LONG S.
