Dymphna
Dymphna ♀ This is the name of a medieval Flemish saint about whom little is known beyond the fact that she is regarded as the protector of lunatics and epileptics. According to legend, she was an Irish girl who had been abused by her father and killed by him when she opposed his wishes. Her relics are preserved at Gheel, near Antwerp in Belgium, where an important mental hospital of medieval foundation still bears her name. Her name has been identified, rightly or wrongly, with Irish Damhnait.
Variant: Dympna. |
