Durrow

Durrow

Durrow, in modern Co. Offaly, was founded as a monastery by St Colum Cille, most likely between 585 and 589. In his time it was administered as part of the family of Iona and headed by a monk of Iona answerable to the saint. Later Durrow grew into a monastic town with a substantial secular population, so that already in 764 we read in the annals that 200 men of Durrow were killed in battle against another monastic town, Clonmacnoise.
