Dunkers

Dunkers

Dunkers, Baptist sect, officially called the Church of the Brethren, organized its first congregation in Germany (1708). A group came to Germantown, Pa. (1719), but the next year a schism was caused by Conrad Beissel's ascetic teachings, his observance of the seventh day as sabbath, and certain Old Testament ideas about food, and he led a group to found the Ephrata Community in 1732, where they became known as Seventh‐Day Baptists. The Dunkers, sometimes called Dunkards and Tunkers (dippers), derive their name from their method of baptism by triple immersion, once for each member of the Trinity. They preserve the primitive simplicity of the apostolic church, and enjoin plainness of dress, settlement of disputes without recourse to oaths or law, and opposition to tobacco, alcohol, and war.
