Dorothy Osborne
Dorothy Osborne , later Lady Temple, 1627–95, English letter writer. The daughter of a royalist, she became engaged to Sir William Temple against the wishes of her family. Her letters to Temple, both through their long engagement and after their marriage in 1655, show her as a woman of wit, learning, and strong character, and form an excellent picture of the period.

Osborne, Dorothy
Osborne, Dorothy (1627–95), married William Temple in 1654. Her letters to him during the period 1652–4 were published in an edition by Parry (1888), followed by G. C. Moore-Smith's more scholarly edition in 1928. The letters provide an intimate picture of the life, manners, and reading habits of the times, and particularly of a woman's attitudes to marriage and filial duty.
