Donald II
Donald II (d. 900), king of ‘Scotland’ (889–900). Donald is the first king in contemporary record to be referred to as ‘rí Alban’, ‘king of Scotland’. ‘Scotland’ in this period, however, was only the eastern region north of the Forth. Donald was son of Constantine I. His family had lost power between 878 and 889, but succeeded in monopolizing the kingship thereafter for 145 years, from Donald's accession to Malcolm II's death in 1034. Donald's reign, like his father's, was plagued by Scandinavian incursions. He had more success than his father and managed to defeat a Danish force on some unidentified islands. It is likely, however, that he was killed by Scandinavians at Dunnottar (14 miles south of Aberdeen). According to a debatable source he was buried on Iona.
