Domingo Santa María

Domingo Santa María , 1825-89, Chilean historian and statesman, president of Chile (1881-86). A liberal statesman, scholar, and author of several historical works, he took part in revolutions against the conservative regime of Manuel Montt and was twice exiled (1852-53, 1859-60). In his administration the separation of church and state was fostered, the War of the Pacific brought to a successful end, and the last serious uprising of Araucanians suppressed.

Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome

Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome. The church was founded by Pope Liberius (352–66); the present structure was erected under Sixtus III (432–40). According to a medieval tradition the site was indicated by the BVM, who one August night left her footprints in a miraculous fall of snow.

Carreras, José Maria (1946– ) Spanish tenor. He made his debut in Barcelona (1970), going on to sing in opera houses worldwide. At the height of his career he developed leukaemia. After treatment, he successfully returned to the stage in 1988, becoming a household name as one of the Three Tenors, with Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti.
