Dobrich
Dobrich, Bulgaria Hadzhioğlu, Bazardzhik/Bazargic, Tolbukhin Originally named after the Turkish merchant who built the first house here, his name meaning the son, oğlu, of a man who had completed the hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca). During the Ottoman Turkish occupation which lasted from the 15th century until 1878 the town was called Bazardzhik from the Turkish bazar ‘market’. It was then renamed Dobrich after the son of a local 14th‐century boyar, Dobrichev. When this region of Bulgaria became part of Romania in 1913 the town was renamed Bazargic. It returned to Bulgaria in 1940 and the town was once again renamed Dobrich. Between 1949 and 1991 it was called Tolbukhin in honour of the Soviet marshal, Fëdor Tolbukhin (1894–1949), whose 3rd Ukrainian Front liberated the region from the Germans in 1944.
