Disguising
Disguising, term used in the 15th and 16th centuries to describe a form of Court entertainment in England which had something in common with the mumming play and, through the use of masks, with the later Court masque. The word was already falling out of use by 1544 and being replaced by ‘mask’. The Disguising was essentially an amateur production, involving the royal household and attendant nobility, and was often given in honour of a distinguished guest, ending with an exchange of gifts and a dance in which everyone joined. Music and dancing were originally more important than the text.
