diorite

The Oxford Dictionary of Art | 2004 | | Copyright

diorite. A hard, coarse-grained igneous rock, similar to granite and sometimes known as ‘black granite’ (it is usually black or grey in colour). In ancient times it was sometimes used for sculpture in Egypt and the Near East.

diorite Intermediate, coarse-grained igneous rock with up to 10% quartz. Plagioclase feldspars are of the oligoclase—andesine varieties; and ferromagnesian minerals, e.g. pyroxenes or hornblende, are present.
