Diomede Islands
Diomede Islands (Russian: Ostrova Gvozdeva), Russia‐USA Straddling the International Date Line, the two islands are divided between Russia and the USA and were so named because they were discovered in 1728 on St Diomede's Day (16 August) by Vitus Bering†. Big Diomede Island is on the Russian side and is known to them as Ostrov Ratmanova ‘Ratmanov Island’; Little Diomede Island is on the American side. The two islands together are called the Gvozdev Islands after the Russian scientist and explorer, Mikhail Gvozdev (d. c.1759), who surveyed them in 1732.
