Craik, Mrs ( Dinah Maria Mulock) (1826–87), a prolific writer of novels, poems, children's books, fairy tales, essays, and short stories. She is remembered for her highly successful novel, John Halifax, Gentleman (1856). Her short stories were collected in Avillion (1853) and her Collected Poems appeared in 1881.
