Knickerbocker, Diedrich
Knickerbocker, Diedrich, fictitious chronicler of Irving's humorous History of New York (1809) and in shorter tales and sketches dealing with the Dutch background of the state. Owing to Irving, the name became synonymous with the Dutch in respect to New York. The real Knickerbocker family came to America c. 1674 and lived chiefly in Albany County.
