Dickinson, Philemon

The Oxford Essential Dictionary of the U.S. Military | 2001 | Copyright

Dickinson, Philemon (1739–1809) Revolutionary army officer, brigadier general of the New Jersey militia, born in Talbot County, Maryland. Dickinson participated in the battle of Trenton (1777), and he was acclaimed by George Washington for successfully deploying his militia against a foraging party of Charles Cornwallis near the Somerset County courthouse. Washington also attributed much of the American success at Monmouth (1778) to Dickinson and his men.

The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. | 2008 | Copyright

Dickinson city (1990 pop. 16,097), seat of Stark co., SW N.Dak., on the Heart River; inc. 1919. It is a processing and shipping center for a livestock, dairy, and wheat region, as well as a service center for the Williston Basin oil industry. Dickinson State Univ. and state experimental livestock and agricultural stations are in the city.
