Johnson, Diane (Lain)
Johnson, Diane [Lain] (1934–), born in Illinois, long resident in California, where she earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and taught at the University of California, Davis. Her novels include Fair Game (1965), a comic portrayal of four men variously involved with the same woman; Loving Hands at Home (1968), a farcical treatment of a Mormon family; Burning (1971), an apocalyptic view of lives in Los Angeles; The Shadow Knows (1972), portraying the terrifying experiences of a victimized woman; Lying Low (1978), depicting a young woman hiding out as a fugitive in a small California town; and Persian Nights (1987), about the social and emotional life of a young American woman in Persia on its eve of revolution. Lesser Lives (1972) is a biography of the daughter of Thomas Love Peacock, who was the wife of George Meredith, and she also wrote Dashiell Hammett: A Life (1983). Terrorists and Novelists (1982) collects book reviews.

Johnson, Diane
Johnson, Diane (1934– ), American novelist and biographer, born in Illinois and educated at the universities of Utah and California. Her ironic and observant novels, many of which have a hint of thriller suspense, include Fair Game (1965), The Shadow Knows (1972), Persian Nights (1987), Health and Happiness (1990), and Le Divorce (1997), a Jamesian novel of manners with a violent undertow set in Paris. She has also written an innovative feminist life of Mary Ellen Peacock, wife of G. Meredith (Lesser Lives, 1972), and a life of D. Hammett (1983).
