Demetrius

Demetrius

Demetrius ♂ Latin form of Greek Dēmētrios ‘follower of Demeter’, classical goddess of fertility. This name was borne by several early Christian martyrs; its huge popularity in eastern Europe is due in particular to the fame of a 4th-century saint martyred under Diocletian. For some reason, it never achieved much popularity in western Europe.

Cognates: Spanish, Portuguese, Italian: Demetrio. Greek: Demétrios. Russian: Dmitri. Bulgarian, Serbian: Dimitar.
