Declaratory Act

Declaratory Act

Declaratory Act, ‘an act for the better securing of the dependency of the kingdom of Ireland upon the Crown of Great Britain’, also known, from the regnal year, as the 6th of George I. Passed by the British parliament in 1720, in response to the Sherlock v. Annesley controversy, it denied that the Irish House of Lords had any jurisdiction over appeals from the courts, and asserted the right of the British parliament to pass legislation binding on Ireland. Its repeal, confirmed in the Renunciation Act (1783), was a central part of the ‘constitution of 1782’ (see legislative independence).

Declaratory Act

Declaratory Act, 1766. This asserted parliamentary sovereignty against the claims of the American assemblies, although in other writings it was made clear that Parliament would not try to tax Americans. It was designed to win the consent of king, Lords, and Commons to the modification, or repeal, of the Stamp Act.
