David McMurtie Gregg

David McMurtie Gregg 1833-1916, Union general in the Civil War, b. Huntingdon, Pa., grad. West Point, 1855. Gregg served with the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac and was particularly distinguished in the fighting of July 3 at Gettysburg, when he checked Jeb Stuart's attempt to get to the Union rear.

Gregg, David McMurtrie (1833–1916) U.S. Army officer, born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Gregg participated in both the 1862 Peninsular and Maryland campaigns under Gen. George B. McClellan and was later praised for his leadership role as part of the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac in its battles against the forces of J.E.B. Stuart, particularly at Gettysburg (1863). After the war Gregg served briefly as a foreign consul and for three years as a Pennsylvania state official.
