Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus (b Danzig [now Gdańsk, Poland], 16 Oct. 1726; d Berlin, 7 Feb. 1801). German painter, illustrator, and printmaker of Polish ancestry. He spent his career in Berlin, where he settled in 1743. Largely self-taught, he began with miniatures and progressed to oil paintings and etchings. From the late 1760s he concentrated on book illustrations and became the most prolific and famous German artist of his time in this field, with a huge and varied output.
