Damaris

Damaris

Damaris ♀ Mainly U.S.: name of a woman mentioned in the New Testament as being converted to Christianity by St Paul (Acts 17:34). Its origin is not clear, but it is probably Greek, perhaps a late form of Damalis ‘calf’. It was taken up in the 16th century, along with the names of other characters fleetingly mentioned in the New Testament, and has been occasionally used ever since.

Damaris One of Paul's few converts at Athens (Acts 17: 34). His little success there perhaps accounts for the anxiety he felt in coming to Corinth (1 Cor. 2: 3).
