Dalys Theatre

Daly's Theatre

Daly's Theatre, New York, on Broadway, below 30th Street. Originally known as Banvard's, and later Wood's, Museum, this opened in 1867. Although the repertory was mainly burlesque, variety, and melodrama, straight plays were occasionally performed after 1872. After several seasons as the Broadway and the New Broadway, the theatre was remodelled and redecorated and opened in 1879 as Daly's, to become one of the leading playhouses of New York. One of its most successful productions was The Taming of the Shrew with Ada Rehan in 1887. Daly continued to manage the theatre until his death in 1899, and it retained his name until it was demolished in 1920, having been a cinema since 1915.
