Daitoku-ji

Daitoku-ji. The Monastery of Great Virtue, one of the largest Zen Buddhist monasteries in Kyōto. It was built in 1319 and formed part of the Gosan (literally, ‘five mountains’), a confederation of five monasteries, based on the model established by the Sung emperor, Ningtsung.

Daitoku-ji

Daitoku-ji. A Rinzai zen temple in Kyoto, built in 1324 and consecrated in 1327 by Shūhō Myōchō (1282–1337). It became the home temple of the Daitokuji-ha, one of the major sects within Rinzai.
