Hammarskjöld, Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl

Hammarskjöld, Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl (b. 29 July 1905, d. 18 Sept. 1961). UN Secretary-General 1953–61 Born at Jönköping in Sweden, he studied at Stockholm University, where he later became professor of economics 1933–6. He then entered government service and was deputy Foreign Minister 1951–3. Succeeding Trygve Lie as UN Secretary-General, he showed great skill and impartiality in his adept handling of the Suez Crisis. Under his direction, the UN gained a central role in the decolonization of Africa. He initiated and directed the UN's involvement in the Congo Crisis, through making controversial use of Article 99 of the UN Charter, which he believed allowed the Secretary-General to take initiatives independent of approval by the Security Council or the General Assembly. His death in an air accident on a flight from the Congo was suspected to have been engineered by the powerful mining interests which opposed his use of UN troops to maintain the unity of the Congo. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize posthumously.
