Cyclorama

Cyclorama

Cyclorama, curved wall, or section of a dome, built at the back of the stage, with an unbroken surface upon which light can be thrown. The effects thus achieved can be striking, but since to present a perfect surface a cyclorama must be rigidly and heavily built, generally of hard cement, it has several drawbacks, interfering with access to the stage from the sides and with the suspension of scenery from above. Being immobile, it also becomes a potential obstacle when not in use, and limits the scenery to one style only. A moveable cyclorama has been invented, but never widely adopted. A partial, or shallow, cyclorama, or even a plain, uncurved, distempered back wall, has often been used instead and proved just as effective. In Germany, where the cyclorama was first used, it is called a Rundhorizont.
