Cracow
Cracow, Australia, Poland Poland: locally Kraków and named after a Polish knight, Krak or Krakus, who built a castle on a hill overlooking the River Vistula. According to a popular legend, Cracow was afflicted by a dragon which demanded a virgin every day to appease its appetite. Other knights tried to kill it without success. Krakus killed a sheep and filled its carcass with sulphur. The dragon consumed it in a mouthful, was tormented by thirst, plunged into the river, and drank so much that it burst. The city was the capital of Poland in 1370–1609. Between 1795 and 1918 it was subject to Austrian rule. The Republic of Cracow, or Free City of Cracow, was established by the Congress of Vienna and was the only part of Poland to be independent, in 1815–46, after the third partition of the country in 1795; it was under the joint protection of Austria, Prussia, and Russia.
